Green Cheek Conure

Green Cheek Conures are in the Pyhurra family of Conures

They are known as the quiet Conures because unlike most other Conures, they do not have an ear shattering scream. They still have the, “full of themselves,” Conure personality and love to be in the middle of attention. Green Cheek Conures are the clowns of the bird world, preferring to do many activities on their backs. They are very toy appreciative, needing many to keep their activity level satisfied. Green Cheeks can entertain themselves for long periods of time with a group of plastic bottle caps, so the toys do not need to be expensive or store bought. Make sure what you provide is a safe object because they will put everything in their mouths.

Young green cheeks will go through a “terrible 2” stage. They tend to get a little nippy, not biting, but just enough to let you know something is not going their way. Once you can determine what this is and deal appropriately, this behavior does not last and Green Cheeks make excellent pets for life. They are a joy to be around and will allow extensive handling and “roughing up” as they love to tumble and roll.

Green Cheeks are available in several mutations, other than the normal greens. Pineapple, turquoise, cinnamon, and yellow sided are all mutations of the Green Cheek that have become readily available in recent years.

Green Cheeks love fresh vegetables, fruit, and of course small hook bill seeds and pellets. My Green Cheeks love a little chicken occasionally. You need to provide the largest cage possible because this is a very active bird. To be truly happy they need lots of out of cage time and attention from their human companion. If you are looking for a fun pet bird, the Green Cheek Conure is sure to please.
