Parrotlets

Parrotlets are the smallest true parrot and originate from South America. They have an attitude like their larger cousins so their size is sometimes misleading as to their personality. They are sometimes referred to as, “a big attitude in a small package.” Parrotlets come in seven species with the Pacific and Green Rump being the most widely known and bred. The Pacific has several mutations, some being blues, yellows, whites, dilutes, pastels, and pied, to name a few. Parrotlets can make great little pets if trained properly. They can become very territorial of their cage and need to be shown the proper respect regarding that part of their personality. Parrotlets can learn to talk. Their voice is their own, not like the mimic of a Grey or Amazon.

Parrotlets need a good balanced diet consisting of seed pellets, fresh fruits, and vegetables, millet, and greens. They also will enjoy people food. Caution should be taken not to feed any bird salt or sugar, and research should be done for a list of foods that are unsafe for any bird.

Once the birds are acclimated, Parrotlets prove to be easy breeders. When making new pairs of older birds, the male and female should be placed in separate cages side by side until they have become accustomed to each other. Young birds generally will accept another without trouble. Parrotlets are active birds that need plenty of room to move around. They love toys and sleeping huts.
